Dr. Hurt, serves as Assistant Research Scientist for the Program for Strong African American Marriages. She earned a dual-title Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies and Demography from The Pennsylvania State University in 2005 and later completed one year of postdoctoral training at the University of Georgia’s Center for Family Research. Her research program has two major foci. The focus of her descriptive research is to understand the meanings that individuals attach to their intimate relationship experiences and to examine nuanced behaviors and attitudes in romantic ties. The focus of her applied research is to translate this understanding into creative, culturally-sensitive approaches to enhance intimate relationships. More specifically, she studies the effectiveness of skill-based marital and relationship enrichment curricula, which are designed to strengthen intimate relationships. In both areas of research, she employs samples of African American adults and adolescents and integrates qualitative and survey methodologies to provide complementary perspectives in examining these issues.
